Restore Me - JL Seegars
Review by Zuwena
Sighhhhh
Most people have rated this book highly. That was more than enough for me to decide to read the book. I like going in blind when starting a new read. Don’t tell me too much, don’t give it all away. Tell me it’s good and that’s enough.
That was not enough in this case.
On the book cover there’s something mentioned about enemies to lovers. That built up my anticipation because who doesn’t love a good enemies to lovers story. Now imagine my disappointment when the alleged enemy turns out to be a man yearning for a woman he can’t have so decides being ‘mean’ to her is the next best thing. The lady on her part has been trying to foster a cordial relationship between them. Are the enemies in the room with us?
Despite the false advertisement, I decided to push through. Suddenly we’ve gone from ‘enemies’ to FWBs I guess??
The smut just put me off. Now let me not lie and claim that I don’t like spice in books. That’s not it. I didn’t feel that the characters had laid enough foundation for all of this spice to be happening, you know? Like I’m basically being told the characters have chemistry but I haven’t seen it. We went from 0 to 100.
Nevertheless we can’t ignore the high ratings from people. My question is, does it get better later? And if it does, is it fair to expect a reader to get more than halfway through the book for it to get good?
I liked that the book was supposed to explore grief and how to navigate life after the loss of a partner. I just couldn’t get over how the main characters got together. This was a DNF for me.
So to those who’ve read the book…did it get better?
