Funny Story - Emily Henry
Review by Zuwena
'Funny Story' is my second Emily Henry book. I don't think this is relevant but I still thought I should mention that.
So Miles and Daphne, left by their respective partners for each other. Am I making sense?? Their partners became each others' partners. After claiming that they're just childhood friends. New fear unlocked right? Then they proceed to invite the exes they jilted TO THEIR WEDDING!!! Crazy. Anyway this story isn't about them.
After Daphne's fiance leaves her for his best friend, she ends up living with Miles, the best friend's former boyfriend. I hope I'm explaining it well so you can understand the level of bizarreness. That's how their story starts. We see the slow progress between them from acquaintances to friends then more, all initiated by their shared trauma.
They start fake dating when their exes invite them to their wedding so of course Daphne tells the ex (Peter) that she's dating Miles, if only to hurt him as much as he hurt her. Daphne on her part now plans to leave the town because without Peter it's not really home. Miles endeavours to show that the town is so much more than Peter's world, that she should give it a chance.
There's more to the story than the romance. Friendships are built. Childhood traumas addressed. Walls broken down. So much more.
I should give a warning and say there is quite a bit of smut so if that's not your thing then you should probably steer clear. I will also add that I think it was essential in their story. What I mean is, it's not senseless.
So would I recommend this book? YES. It's funny, there's character growth and great friendships. Though the way Miles texts leaves a lot to be desired (definitely an ick lol) but who doesn't love a good fake dating trope? That makes up for it.
Happy reading. Do let me know what you think if you happen to read or have read this book.
Until next time.
